Dr. Fernandez-Zapico, MD
Dr. Fernandez-Zapico is a MD graduated from the University of Cordoba. Currently, he is a Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology, and staff scientist in the Department of Oncology at Mayo Clinic. His contribution in the oncogenic transcription factors and epigenetic mechanisms modulating pancreatic cancer tumorigenesis has been fundamental for the understanding on how pathways like Hedgehog (Hh) can have a dual role during carcinogenesis and the paradoxical effect of Hh inhibitors in clinical trials. He has nearly 30 years of experience in this field of research, over 200 publications, numerous awards, and a highly prolific mentorship track record
Nicole Williams, PhD
Dr. Nicole Williams is Dean of the College of Science and Engineering at Winona State University, where she provides leadership for seven academic departments and advances STEM education through strategic partnerships, student success initiatives, and high-impact practices. A first-generation college graduate, she was appointed dean in 2023 after serving eight years as Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, where she led program growth, curriculum development, and accreditation efforts. She has been a faculty member at Winona State University since 2004 and is a Full Professor of Mathematics. Her teaching, scholarship, and leadership emphasize mathematics education, inclusive excellence, mentoring, and expanding undergraduate research experiences.
